KEARNEY – Nebraska Department of Roads is hosting a public information open house regarding a proposed improvement of U.S. Highway 30 in Kearney near the UNK Campus.
The meeting is from 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Kearney Public Library, 2020 First Ave.
The proposed project includes work between 12th Avenue and 7th Avenue, which is on the southeast edge of the UNK campus.
The project addresses the need of reducing the rate, frequency and severity of crashes on this segment of US-30 in Kearney; improve the mobility of the traveling public; and improve the reliability of the transportation system.
The need for this project is based on the NDOR Traffic Accident Survey, which warrants corrective measures on this segment of US-30 in Kearney, said the Department of Roads.
Proposed improvements would consist of safety mitigations and intersection improvements. The project may consist of pavement modifications that would require removing portions of the existing pavement cross section of concrete and building new concrete pavement. The project would also include replacement or installation of storm sewer, underdrains, sidewalks, curb ramps, lighting, traffic signals, and permanent pavement markings.
The proposed project would require the acquisition of additional property rights including new right-of-way, and temporary easements throughout the project area. Access to adjacent properties would be maintained during construction but would be limited at times due to phasing requirements.
The proposed project is in the 5-year Nebraska Surface Transportation Program, and it is anticipated to be completed within one construction season.
Traffic accommodations are currently being evaluated, and the need for a detour has not yet been determined.
