Mind the Mess: A little chaos leads to a lot of creativity at UNK

Creativity can be messy. Sometimes, that’s the whole point.

More than 120 students from high schools across the state visited campus Wednesday for “Mind the Mess,” an annual recruitment event hosted by the UNK Department of Art and Design.

The event encourages students to step outside their comfort zones, experiment with unfamiliar materials and embrace the unpredictable nature of artmaking. Through hands-on, collaborative workshops, participants are challenged to take creative risks, explore new techniques and discover possibilities in unexpected outcomes.

This year’s activities included large-scale collaborative painting, mixed-media creations, wearable sculptures made from discarded materials and an immersive experience that allowed students to transform an entire room into a work of art.

The day began with a tour of the newly renovated Museum of Nebraska Art in downtown Kearney, where students explored the galleries and found inspiration before heading to campus for lunch, demonstrations and workshops.

More than a chance to get messy, the event introduces prospective students to UNK’s art and design programs while celebrating the creative process and the idea that mistakes can lead to something extraordinary.
