The theatre department at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will present seven performances of Antigone in the studio theatre, located in the lower level of the Fine Arts Building.
Antigone, written by Sophocles in 441 B.C., tells the story of Oedipus’ daughter Antigone, a strong woman struggling to maintain her free-will amidst the tyrannical rule of the new king in the war-torn city of Thebes.
“The issues in this play are universal ones that are incredibly relevant in today’s society,” said Daniel Jones, director and costume coordinator.
“The recent debate over the Bush administration’s use of the Patriot Act during our current war draws a close parallel to the iron-fisted rule of Creon,” he said.
Antigone will be performed Feb. 9-11 and 16-18 at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, Feb. 12, matinee will be at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens. In addition to a talented cast of students in the leading roles, this production features theatre department faculty members Jack Garrison as Teiresias and Janice Fronczak as Eurydice. Other faculty involved include David Tidwell, scene designer, and Shawn Deiger, lighting and sound designer.
