New VOIP install bringing high-end phone service, new calling features to campus

KEARNEY – Information Technology Services has begun the campus-wide deployment at UNK of Voice over IP (VoIP) phone service.

By June 2018, we will replace almost 1,000 analog phones in more than 30 buildings with Cisco VoIP phone sets and service.

VoIP offers greater functionality, features and capabilities that can help you and those you work with be more productive and efficient. We are implementing this project in collaboration with the Lincoln campus, enabling us to also provide toll-free calling between the UNK and UNL campuses.

Other new features include high quality two-way speaker phones, call history, delivery of voicemail messages (audio files) via email, instant messaging and presence.

Installations are planned by building and will follow a monthly schedule. Otto Olsen, Fine Arts and Thomas Hall are currently in progress.

ITS staff and Technology Coordinators are working together and with departments to determine the requirements for each installation. Faculty and staff will have opportunities to attend training.

A VoIP website is available with project updates and schedules, as well as phone set selections and features.

If you have additional questions about the project, please feel free to contact me at 308.865.8950. If you have specific technical questions regarding your new phone service, please contact the UNK Helpdesk at 308.865-8363 or by email unkhelpdesk@unk.edu.
