KEARNEY – A new parking lot at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will add 31 new parking stalls.
The new 24-hour lot, located at Ninth Avenue and 25th Street on the east edge of campus, will be designated for residential students. Two of the stalls in the new lot will be ADA compliant.
The project is expected to be complete before the beginning of the fall 2016 semester.
“Parking is an ongoing topic on campus and the new lot will help alleviate some parking issues,” said Vice Chancellor of Business and Finance Jon Watts.
UNK currently has 38 parking lots with 3,093 stalls on campus.
The new parking lot is also the first phase of a project that aims to rework Ninth Avenue. UNK and the City of Kearney partnered on a traffic study to consider how to improve the intersection of Ninth Avenue and Highway 30.
In May, the Kearney City Council approved an agreement with the Nebraska Department of Roads to improve Highway 30 between Sixth Avenue and 12th Avenue. Part of the proposed improvements include removing left turns from Ninth Avenue and making it right-turn only.
