KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney’s Delta Tau Delta fraternity is once again being recognized among the best collegiate chapters in North America.

UNK’s Theta Kappa Chapter will receive the Chapter Award of Distinction from the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), an honor recognizing fraternities that demonstrate excellence in operations, campus involvement, leadership and service while creating a positive fraternity experience.

The award is presented annually by the NIC, a trade association representing men’s fraternities on campuses in the U.S. and Canada. This year, a total of five fraternity chapters were selected for the distinction, including honorees from the University of Arkansas, Clemson University, Auburn University and Dartmouth College.

UNK’s Delta Tau Delta fraternity also earned the award in 2024, reinforcing the chapter’s reputation as one of the nation’s top-performing fraternity organizations.

Chapter President Dylan Pfeifer credits current members and alumni with establishing the culture that defines the fraternity today.

“Being recognized with this prestigious award is far more than just a trophy and honor,” said Pfeifer, a senior from Central City. “This represents our motto, ‘Committed to Lives of Excellence,’ as the men of Theta Kappa strive to be the best we can.”

That commitment has translated into a long list of accomplishments at both the university and national levels.

Originally chartered at UNK in 1993, the Theta Kappa Chapter has earned Delta Tau Delta’s prestigious Hugh Shields Award for Chapter Excellence seven times, including first-place national rankings in 2023 and 2026. The chapter has also received the Court of Honor distinction 14 times, recognizing placement among the top 20 chapters nationally.

This spring, Delta Tau Delta was named UNK’s Outstanding Collaborative Chapter and claimed the William R. Nester Cup, awarded to the fraternity with the highest GPA on campus. The organization has earned that academic distinction eight times in the past 10 semesters and recorded a 3.726 chapter GPA during fall 2025, the highest among all UNK fraternities and sororities.

Members continue to distinguish themselves individually across campus leadership roles, too. Derek Pfeifer of Central City was named the 2025-26 UNK Fraternity Member of the Year and received the Applauding Excellence Transcending Leader Award; Marcus Utecht of Blue Hill earned Outstanding Senior honors; and John Placke of St. Libory was elected student body vice president for 2026-27.

According to chapter adviser Samuel Thede, a 2025 UNK graduate, the fraternity’s success stems from a culture that prioritizes academic excellence, accountability, leadership development, community engagement and service.

“The chapter has created an environment where leadership is expected, service is meaningful and excellence is the standard,” Thede wrote. “Their contributions have had a lasting and positive effect on UNK Greek Life and the surrounding community, setting a benchmark for what a fraternity chapter can and should be.”

In recent years, Delta Tau Delta members have raised more than $20,000 for Breakthrough T1D, the fraternity’s national philanthropic partner, while contributing more than 700 service hours supporting organizations in Kearney and their hometown communities. They support a variety of campus events and initiatives, as well.

“These measurable outcomes reflect not only strong organizational leadership, but also a deeply rooted commitment to service,” Thede stated. “Members are not simply encouraged to participate; they are inspired to take ownership of their contributions and recognize the tangible impact of their efforts.”

Renae Zimmer, director of UNK Student Engagement and Leadership, noted that the fraternity continues to raise expectations for student organizations across campus.

“Delta Tau Delta consistently goes above and beyond in establishing and embodying fraternal values that are deeply woven into multiple facets of the member experience, chapter culture and broader community impact,” she stated. “Their collaborative spirit and dedication to the fraternity and sorority community elevate the standard for others.”

That impact has also been recognized beyond the university.

Corydon Taylor, a senior leadership consultant for Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, describes the UNK chapter as a model organization that operates at the highest level nationally.

“As a senior leadership consultant, I have had the opportunity to visit, work closely with and witness the successes of a great group of men who take every aspect of their membership extremely seriously,” Taylor wrote in his endorsement of the chapter. “This group constantly pushes what is possible and is always striving for that next accolade.”

Delta Tau Delta Chief Executive Officer Jack Kreman, a 2004 UNK graduate, and Jud Horras, president and CEO of the NIC, will present the Chapter Award of Distinction during Karnea, the fraternity’s biennial convention hosted Aug. 5-9 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dylan Pfeifer believes the honor is a sign of what lies ahead.

“Delta Tau Delta is a chapter built on brotherhood and leadership,” he said. “We truly are grateful to see that our hard work and dedication are being recognized, and we are excited to see what other honors this chapter brings in the future.”
