Dr. Brett Chloupek will give his Space, Place and Identity: Historical and Religious Geography in Eastern Slovakia presentation today (Nov. 7) at 3:30 p.m.
The presentation will be in Copeland Hall Room 142 for Geography Awareness Week at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
Dr. Chloupek, a Harvard native and UNK graduate, is currently a lecturer in the Department of Geography at Kansas State University. He earned a bachelor of science in geography and computer information systems from UNK. He also served as student body president and student regent while a UNK student.
He then went to Oklahoma State University where he earned a master’s degree in geography and geographic information systems. He was a National Science Foundation GK-12 Fellow, and he graduated with his doctorate degree from the University of Kansas where he was a 2009 David L Boren Fellow.
His research for the past seven years has focused on the cultural and historical geography of Central and Eastern Europe, with an emphasis on demographic and religious issues in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Dr. Cloupek’s most recent research has explored the conflict between the Catholic Church in Slovakia and the Communist government that controlled the country between 1948-1989.
