KEARNEY – Students will get a glimpse into lives of the homeless and make cardboard boxes their homes for one night when UNK hosts its “A Night Without a Home” event Friday.
University of Nebraska at Kearney students will bring their own boxes and experience what it’s like to be cold, hungry and homeless by sleeping under the bell tower on campus.
Sponsored by Chi Sigma Iota and the Department of Counseling and School Psychology, this is the event’s first year at UNK.
“This event is about educating people that we have homeless people in our community, why we should help them and how we can help,” said Ramesh Neupane, vice president of Chi Sigma Iota.
Neupane said it’s important for students, as well as the community, to realize homeless families exist in the Kearney area.
“Awareness is our main goal,” he said. “We need to draw attention to how homeless people live and show our campus what it feels like to be homeless,” said Neupane.
The event is open to the public and starts at 7 p.m. Friday and ends at 7 a.m. Saturday.
Guest speakers from Crossroads Center, S.A.F.E. Center and Goodwill will share information about resources offered to homeless in the Kearney area from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Kearney musician Brody Ray Runge also will perform from 9 to 9:45 p.m. as part of the festivities.
