UNK celebrated the success of its first-generation students Wednesday with a First-Gen Festival at Cushing Coliseum. Coinciding with the National First-Generation College Celebration and the Nov. 8 anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965, the event included games, prizes, free food and the announcement of the First-Gen Trailblazer and Friend of First-Gen award winners. It was organized by UNK’s First Generation Leadership Team and First-Gen Lopers student organization, with support from UNK Campus Recreation and UNK Dining.
A first-generation student is one whose parents have not completed a bachelor’s degree. At UNK, more than 40% of students are first-generation. Learn more about First-Gen Lopers.
