PHOTOS: UNK community celebrates spring with Holi Festival of Colors

More than 140 UNK students and employees celebrated their own version of the Hindu event, the Holi Festival of Colors, Tuesday night near the Bell Tower.

The Global Student Association (GSA) invited students, faculty and staff of all backgrounds to throw colored cornstarch and water in celebration of spring.

Luis Olivas, interim director of the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, said Hindus celebrate the colors of spring and the rebirth of life with this bright festival. GSA wanted UNK’s Hindu students from Nepal and India, who couldn’t travel home for the festival, to have the opportunity to celebrate the tradition in Nebraska. It also was a great way for others to learn about Hindu culture.

The festival is typically held in March, but GSA hosted its event in April when Nebraska temperatures are warmer.
