KEARNEY – There’s a new spot to get that quick pick-me-up on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.

Starbucks opened Wednesday inside UNK’s Nebraskan Student Union. The popular coffeehouse chain offers a full line of hot and cold beverages – from freshly brewed coffee and espresso creations to teas, fruity concoctions and Frappuccino. The food menu, which covers breakfast through dinner, includes sandwiches, wraps, pastries and an assortment of sweet treats.

Starbucks is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Friday, with regular hours starting next week. Those hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and 2 to 8 p.m. Sundays. The coffee shop is closed on Saturdays.

Starbucks can be accessed using the student union’s northwest entrance as work progresses on a million renovation project that’s upgrading a portion of the 53-year-old building.

That project, which started in December, also adds a Chick-fil-A to the union space. The restaurant known for its chicken sandwiches and waffle fries is scheduled to open Aug. 20, the first day of fall classes at UNK.

Starbucks, Chick-fil-A and Subway, which remains in the student union, are all open to the public. The restaurants, under contract with UNK’s food service provider, are available for students to use their flexible meal plan dollars.

The renovation project, paid for with facility reserve funds and vendor investments, includes a number of improvements that will make the student union a more modern hub for campus activity.
