‘Grooving Through the Decades’ homecoming begins Monday at UNK

KEARNEY – “Grooving through the Decades” is the theme for 2016 University of Nebraska at Kearney Homecoming Week, which is Monday through Saturday (Sept. 19-24).

There will be events each day of Homecoming Week.

On Monday, students will compete in a Lawn Display Contest at 3 p.m. on the Campus Greens. Loper FEUD, an event based on the game show Family Feud, begins at 5 p.m. Monday in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room.

A student spirit competition begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Health and Sports Center. The UNK volleyball team will compete against Fort Hays State University at 7 p.m. in the Health and Sports Center, with the spirit contest winners performing during the game.

On Wednesday, students compete in the Canned Food Build from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Campus Greens. Teams are given donations or purchase their own perishable food items to create structures based on the homecoming theme. Canned goods are then donated to area food banks. Food is donated to Mid-Nebraska Food Bank and UNK’s Big Blue Cupboard, which provides non-perishable food items to students in need.

On Thursday, the Lip Sync Competition begins at 7 p.m., and Homecoming Royalty Crowning is at 9 p.m. at the Health and Sports Center.

On Friday, students will compete in an adventure race across campus beginning at 5 p.m. on the Campus Greens.

The Homecoming Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Museum of Nebraska Art and progresses south on Central Avenue, west on Railroad Street, north on Third Avenue, west on 21st Street, south on Eighth Avenue and west on 20th Street ending on Ninth Avenue.

Buses and vehicles picking up parade entrants can park in the West Pharmaceutical Co. parking lot at 923 W. Railroad St. University of Nebraska Regent Kent Schroeder is grand marshal for the parade.

The homecoming football game against Washburn University kicks off at 2 p.m. at Foster Field.

Homecoming royalty will be honored at halftime of the football game. Other halftime activities include recognition of new inductees into the UNK Athletic Hall of Fame and announcement of homecoming sweepstakes winners. The UNK Sapphires Dance team and UNK Pride of the Plains marching band will also perform.
