KEARNEY – Three incoming freshman at the University of Nebraska at Kearney were recently awarded Buckle Excellence Scholarships by Kearney-based clothing retailer The Buckle Inc.
Justin Joyce of Giltner is the recipient of a ,000 scholarship over two years, while Jonathon Marvin of O’Neill and Jonah Peterson of Central City each were awarded one-year ,000 scholarships.
All three are studying Computer Science and Information Technology at UNK.
In addition to scholarship money, the three recipients are given opportunities to build relationships with Buckle IT professionals through activities such as job shadowing and tours of Buckle facilities. Buckle also has an internship program for upper-level CSIT students and provides classroom presentations and student project reviews.
Joyce was active at Giltner in football, basketball, track, quiz bowl and pep band. He also was the tech aide for his school’s IT coordinator.
Marvin was active with student council, bank, football, wrestling and track at O’Neill. He also built his own computer and wrote an IOS app for his school. He taught himself app development through YouTube and other online sources. His career goal is to develop software to help and entertain people.
Peterson was involved with wrestling, cross country, track and show choir at Central City. He completed a research project that placed in the top five at the Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences competition in Lincoln and qualified for the national competition in Washington D.C. to be held in February 2016.
