UNK biology, plant science scholarship established by Alan and Irene Smith

KEARNEY – University of Nebraska at Kearney alumnus Alan L. Smith feels he was never able to fully participate in his college experience. While studying at UNK, then called Kearney State College, he was juggling a job while concentrating on his studies in biology and plant science during the early 1960s. KEARNEY — Three students from Broken Bow, Centura and West Point-Beemer high schools will attend the University of Nebraska at Kearney as Omaha World-Herald/Kearney Hub scholars. This year’s recipients of the scholarship are Weston Walz, Grace McDonald and Mitchell Lierman. The OWH/Hub scholarship is one of the premier academic awards at UNK. Scholarship supports first-generation students, honors Peterson family’s legacy of hard work

George and Venetia Peterson (center) made Kearney their new home in the early 1900s and raised sons Peter (left) and John. Peter Peterson has created a scholarship at UNK for students who are first in their family to attend college.

KEARNEY – George and Venetia Peterson immigrated to Kearney in the early 1900s with nothing but a third-grade education and the desire to work hard so their children would have a better life – and the opportunity for education.
