WIND ENSEMBLE/SYMPHONIC BAND COMBINED CONCERT SET FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 19

Dr. Duane Bierman
UNK director of bands, 308.865.8607

The spring combined Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band concert will be held Thursday, April 19, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the UNK Fine Arts Recital Hall.

Dr. Duane Bierman, UNK director of bands and assistant professor of music and performing arts, will lead the Wind Ensemble segment of the concert.

Christopher Gugel, senior music education major from Amherst, will be a featured soloist with the Wind Ensemble. Gugel, who was the winner of the UNK Concerto/Aria competition last October, will perform “Fantasia for Alto Saxophone” by Claude T. Smith.

“We will also feature a composition by UNK music professor Dr. Darleen Mitchell, and an arrangement of a piece of video game music for the band by one of the members, Daniel Gibbs of Kearney,” Dr. Bierman said. ”This is a culmination of a research project for Dan, and he will be presenting the recording of the work the next day at UNK Student Research Day.”

Dr. Michael Beard, UNK assistant director of bands and assistant professor of music and performing arts, will lead the Symphonic Band segment of the concert.

“For the UNK Symphonic Band, we are moving back towards the classical repertoire after a very contemporary first concert of the semester,” Dr. Beard said. “We are performing works by well-known composers, including Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy and Bela Bartok.”

“In addition, a piece by our very own Dr. Ron Crocker, UNK associate dean of Fine Arts and Humanities, will be featured with the composer conducting,” Dr. Beard said. “We also have invited Dr. Seth Fletcher, UNK senior lecturer of music and performing arts, to lead the group on Clare Grundman’s ‘Kentucky 1800.’”

“The ensemble has enjoyed working with the many conductors for this concert,” Dr. Beard said.

The grand finale of the concert will be a massed band performance of “Mars” by Gustav Holst. The massed band will include the UNK Wind Ensemble, the UNK Symphonic Band and several UNK music faculty, including: Dr. Beard, French horn; Dr. Deborah Freedman, UNK associate professor of music and performing arts, French horn; Dr. Seth Fletcher, UNK senior lecturer of music and performing arts, euphonium; Dr. David Nabb, UNK professor of music and performing arts, alto saxophone; Franziska Nabb, UNK lecturer of music and performing arts, flute; and Dr. James Payne, UNK professor of music and performing arts, trumpet.
