Touch those toes and stretch those muscles, the University of Nebraska at Kearney hosts the sixth annual Fun 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, April 19, at 9 a.m. at the Ron and Carol Cope Stadium.
The Fun 5k Run/Walk event continues to grow each year. Last year, there were more than 250 race participants and 25 business sponsors in 2007. This year’s event is expected to have more than 350 participants. The event is open to UNK Students and community members.
Jami Schaffnitt, coordinator of student activities, said, “This event allows students to take their focus off of studying just for a bit to get out and get some exercise, clear their minds and enjoy time with friends! It’s a fun, spring event that everyone enjoys whether they are walking or running!”
The deadline for entering the event is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11. For UNK students, the event is free. A $10 entry fee is required for those who register after the deadline. For non-student entries, the cost is $15; the cost is $20 if the entry is received after the deadline. Race sponsors have a $5 fee, which becomes $10 after the deadline.
There are two divisions, student and non-student, and the top three competitors in each division receive prizes. All cash proceeds for the event go to the Student Leadership Scholarship Fund. Prizes such as merchandise or gift certificates, which are donated by sponsors, are given to the winners.
The Fun 5k Run/Walk is sponsored by the Loper Programming and Activities Council (LPAC) and funded by UPFF. Individuals who would like to help with the event can contact Jami Schaffnitt in the Nebraskan Student Union office by calling 308.865.8523 or e-mail schaffnittjn@unk.edu.
