A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, March 1, for a new sign that will mark the west edge of the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.
The sign will be located at the intersection of Highway 30 and University Drive, and, once constructed, will be 8 feet tall and 24 feet long.
The groundbreaking ceremony will include comments by UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen and Student Body President Michael Eiberger.
“The sign is a gift from the students to the university,” said Kevin Wait, student body vice president. “Now, people driving toward the university from the west will be able to see a sign for UNK.”
Wait said funding for the sign was gifted by the current and previous student governments on campus. The previous student government had requested that $10,000 be set aside for the sign, and the current student government came up with $11,600 more for the sign. The sign will cost a total of $21,600.
The sign is expected to be completed before the university’s spring commencement.
