Student Support Services/Financial Aid will be celebrating National TRIO Day in the lobby at the University of Nebraska at Kearney on Thursday, February 21 from 2-4 p.m. Student Support Services will be serving popcorn and hot drinks and sharing information on TRIO programs.

National Trio Day was designed by concurrent resolution on February 24, 1986 by the 99th Congress. Typically, National TRIO day is celebrated on the last Saturday of February as a day of recognition for the various Federal TRIO Programs. Student Support Services is one of these programs, with the mission to provide quality services focusing on academic success for participants who qualify by being first generation, low income, and/or a student with a disability. Other National TRIO programs besides Student Support Services include Talent Search, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math/Science, Veterans Upward Bound, Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program and Educational Opportunity Centers. TRIO programs were established over 30 years ago to assist low income students in overcoming class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.
