“’Stuff’ Great Leaders Do” is the theme of the Region IV Student Leadership Conference which is being hosted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney College of Education on Friday, Nov. 16.
Attending the conference will be more than 200 fifth and sixth grade students from Region IV schools, which include Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Lexington, Holdrege, Minden and small schools surrounding these communities.
Jim Weeks, Doane College athletic director, will give the opening presentation beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room.
“The students who attend have demonstrated leadership traits in their schools,” said Dr. Ed Scantling, UNK dean of education. “The conference is all about helping these students develop those leadership traits for the improvement of their futures.”
In the afternoon, the students will rotate among nine stations in locations across the campus where they will receive instruction from UNK faculty and staff on a wide range of career, university and leadership topics.
According to Dr. Scantling, at the end of the day, the students will have the chance to discuss what they gained from the day that will help them become more effective leaders in school and in the community.
UNK personnel participating include: Leslie Abegglen, music and performing arts; Terry Gibbs, industrial technology; Steve Amundson, industrial technology; Dr. Bill Wozniak, psychology; Dr. Timothy Reece, physics and physical science; Dr. Lee Powell, physics and physical science; Mary Rittenhouse, economics; Mark Wethington, theatre; Shelley Haberlan, instructional technology; Eve Scantling, health and physical education and recreation; and Mary Kommers, communication disorders.

Leslie Abegglen presents “Take a Chance with Dance” in the Dance Studio, Lower Level.
B— Otto Olsen Building Room 138B (12:20-12:40, 12:50-1:10, 1:50-2:10)
“Leadership in Air Transportation” Learn to identify the leaders who guide the finest transportation system in the world with Terry Gibbs and Steve Amundson.

Dr. Bill Wozniak will take students on an auditory and visual localization called, “Ears, Eyes and You.”

Dr. Timothy Reece and Dr. Lee Powell will take youth leaders on a journey of the planets and stars.

Mary Rittenhouse, director of the UNK Center for Economic Education, will involve students in hands-on economics activities.

Go behind the scenes with Mark Wethington to tour the UNK theater, including backstage, control booth, set and learn about how UNK puts on a theater production.
G— College of Education Building Mac Lab (12:20-12:40, 12:50-1:10, 1:20-1:40, 1:50-2:10)
Shelley Haberlan, director of Instructional Technology for the College of Education, will take students through a demonstration of the SmartBoard and other technologies used in preparing teachers.
H— Cushing Coliseum Field House (12:20-12:40, 12:50-1:10, 1:20-1:40, 1:50-2:10)
Eve Scantling and UNK students will involve young leaders in activities that stress leadership and the necessity to work as a team member.
I — COE Building A 120 (12:50-1:10, 1:20-1:40, 1:50-2:10)
Mary Kommers and UNK students in the Department of Communication Disorders will teach participants to write their name in phonetics, see the ear through a video otoscope and try out some alternative-augmentative communication devices.
