The University of Nebraska at Kearney athletics program has earned a top 25 standing in the prestigious Sears Directors’ Cup for NCAA Division II, presented annually by the nation’s athletics directors. The cup, developed by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today, honors programs for excellence and performance in each of the four categories with the best overall athletics program. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by SEARS Roebuck and Co.
This recognition follows UNK’s seventh consecutive win of the RMAC conference all-sports trophy, which also is awarded for overall athletic performance. The Sears Directors’ Cup awards points based upon each institution’s finish in up to 14 sports, seven for men and seven for women. National championships earn 100 points with other placements earning points on a descending scale. Year-end totals for UNK place it at 18th overall with 395 points. Joining UNK in the top 25 was the University of Nebraska Omaha at the 22nd position with 351 points. UC-Davis was awarded the Sears Directors’ Cup for 2001-02 after earning 743 points for the year.
The Sears Directors’ Cup is part of the Sears Collegiate Champions program which annually awards more than 2,200 conference and sport champion trophies and a quarter-of-a-million dollars in academic scholarships.
