Janette Payne, who teaches math and geometry courses at Kearney High School, has been named NASDAQ national teacher award regional runner-up.
As a regional winner, Payne received a $1,000 cash award and a commemorative plaque, which was presented to her this week by Amy Stritikus, director of the Center for Economic Education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Payne, who has a master’s degree from UNK, has participated in training sponsored by the center at UNK. The center is a nonprofit organization that helps K-12 educators strengthen economic understanding.
In implementing economics training in her classes at Kearney High, Payne said: “We discussed the economics of their decisions when they buy cars and borrow money. They learned to make choices based on mathematical formulas.”
The NASDAQ National Teaching Award program honors high school teachers in any subject area who advance economic literacy. The selection is based on originality, creativity and effectiveness in furthering students’ understanding of the financial markets, the capital formation process, principles of investing and personal finance, entrepreneurship and market economies. Teachers from more than 40 states and a wide variety of schools and locations competed in this year’s awards program.
