James B. Milliken, president of the University of Nebraska, will address the nearly 400 University of Nebraska at Kearney winter graduates in ceremonies set for 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at the Health and Sports Center.
Milliken came to the University of Nebraska in 1988 and served as vice president for external affairs and corporation secretary for 10 years. Milliken then served as a senior vice president for the University of North Carolina until August 2004, when he became the sixth president of the University of Nebraska. Before coming to the University of Nebraska, Milliken had practiced law in New York City and worked in Washington as legislative assistant to Congresswoman Virginia Smith. He is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Nebraska, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1979. He attended New York University School of Law as a Root-Tilden Scholar, graduating in 1983.
UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen will give the welcome, and UNK Student Body President and Student Regent Brett Chloupek of Harvard will extend greetings on behalf of the Board of Regents. Charles Lindly of Kearney, president of the UNK Alumni Association, will give greetings on behalf of the association.
Rebecca Schneider of Grand Island will give the Senior Class Response. Chrystal DeNio of Columbus will sing the national anthem accompanied by LeeAnn Schluntz of Naponee on the piano. DeNio and Schluntz are both December graduates. The Choraleers, directed by Dr. David Bauer, will provide special music.
