REGION IV ELEMENTARY PRINCIPALS/UNK STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE FRIDAY, NOV. 19

“How to Be Me, No Matter What!” student leadership conference for elementary school students will be held Friday, Nov. 19, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Nebraskan Student Union.

More than 200 people, including 157 students and 40 principals, will attend the conference, which focuses on building leadership skills.

Communities represented include Alma, Amherst, Ansley, Arapahoe, Arnold, Arcadia, Axtell, Beaver City, Bartlett, Blue Hill, Burwell, Cozad, Central City, Dunning, Elm Creek, Elwood, Fullerton, Genoa, Gothenburg, Grand Island, Halsey, Hastings, Hildreth, Holdrege, Kearney, Kenesaw, Lexington, Loup City, Mason City, Merna, Ord, Oxford, Ravenna, Riverdale, Scotia, St. Libory, Shelton, Silver Creek, Spalding, Wilcox and Wood River.

Mary Kay Mueller, known to many as “The Gratitude Guru,” will present the keynote address to students. Her keynote address is titled How to Be Me, No Matter What! She will also address elementary school principals. The presentation for principals is titled How to Coach Our Inner Coach.

Mueller is the author of two books, the most recent being Taking Care of Me: The Habits of Happiness. Today, her training programs motivate business leaders, educators, high school seniors and health care professionals from around the world with the keys to happiness, health and success.

After the keynote address, students will have the opportunity to tour the campus and take part in sessions where they can learn about graphic design, economics, astronomy and theater, along with other topics.

“The purpose for the sessions presented by UNK faculty members and Student Services staff is to introduce students to opportunities for hobbies or study or future careers, as well as to learn about the leadership issues related to each of the areas presented,” said Jill Clevenger, K-6 Principal at Shelton Elementary School.

9-9:15 a.m. Introductions
9:15-10:30 a.m. Keynote: “How to Be Me, No Matter What!” with Mary Kay Mueller
10:30-11 a.m. “Getting to Know Each Other’s Strengths”
11-11:45 a.m. Italian Lunch
11:45 a.m. – Noon Organize into color groups for learning stations

Noon-2 p.m. Campus Stations for Students

 

Fine Arts Building – Kriste Sumpter will demonstrate graphic arts strategies used in the field. Go behind the scenes in the theater with Susan Deiger to tour the house, backstage and control booth set, and learn about how UNK puts on a theater production.
Otto Olson Building – Fly a plane during a simulation and learn about the excitement of working in the airway science field with Terry Gibbs.
Copeland Hall – Dr. Bill Wozniak will take students on an auditory and visual localization called, “Ears, Eyes and You.”
Bruner Hall-Planetarium – Dr. Jose Mena-Werth will take youth leaders on a journey of the planets and stars.
Library – Economics education, Mary Rittenhouse will involve students in hands-on economics activities.
College of Education Building – Shelley Haberlan will take students through a demonstration of the SmartBoard and other technologies.
Cushing Coliseum – Eve Scantling will involve students in activities that tie to leadership and the necessity to work on a team.
Nebraskan Student Union – Cami Wacker will take students to several areas in the Nebraskan and discuss student leadership development at UNK

2-2:15 p.m. Return to Nebraskan Student Union for debriefing—What did I see? What did I learn? How does this affect me as a leader?
