A scholarship fund established last year in memory of a University of Nebraska at Kearney counseling and school psychology professor has grown by $8,000 this spring.

Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity raised the $8,000 at the second annual Dr. Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament held recently at the Kearney Country Club.

The $8,000 will go toward the continued endowment of two memorial scholarships — one for athletics and one for the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology — in honor of Dr. Estes, who taught in and chaired the UNK Department of Counseling and School Psychology. After fighting a battle with cancer and then returning to the classroom in the fall of 2004, Dr. Estes passed away in January of 2005.

Participation in this year’s tournament grew from 108 players last year to 139 players in the spring tournament.

“The increased participation by UNK faculty and the local Kearney community has helped ensure that this tournament will continue to be a success,” said Tim Sladek of Bartley,  assistant tournament director.

“The annual event is an incredible tribute to a man who has touched countless lives and helped so many,” Sladek said. “We are extremely proud that our fraternity has the privilege to assist and be associated with such an outstanding cause.”

“Through the generous support of the Kearney community, and UNK faculty and staff, Pi Kappa Alpha is able to donate $8,000 to the Dr. Kent Estes Memorial Scholarship Foundation for the second consecutive year,” said Ryan Hernandez of Ogallala,  tournament director.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund may do so through the University of Nebraska Foundation, Hernandez said.
