KEARNEY – The Queer Straight Alliance at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is hosting a Safe Zone Training event to help the campus and area cities create safe environments for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in room 310 of the Nebraskan Student Union. It is free and open to the public.
The training will educate the community about basic queer principles, address homophobia and transphobia issues and create awareness of harassment and its impact on the community, said Matthew Mims, UNK associate professor of counseling and school psychology.
“Sometimes students haven’t interacted with someone with a different sexual orientation when they come from small communities,” he said. “This is a way to help them evaluate and form their own personal opinions while promoting respect for other people.”
The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and Division of Student Affairs.
