KEARNEY – UNK broke ground Thursday on three new sand volleyball courts, kicking off a student-driven project years in the making. Located northwest of the College of Education at the former site of University Residence South, the courts will open by late summer and serve intramurals, student organizations, Loper Athletics and the Kearney community.
Student Government President Sam Schroeder called the project a true team effort, made possible through persistence and collaboration. What started as a big idea is now becoming reality, proof that when students lead with purpose, change happens, he said.
Led by UNK Facilities, the $200,000 project is funded by Student Government, Campus Recreation, UNK Athletics and the Chancellor’s Office. Lighting and additional amenities are being explored as part of a broader push to grow outdoor recreation and student engagement.
“This is what UNK does best. Students lead, and we support,” said interim Chancellor Charlie Bicak. “These courts represent the heart of our campus community, where wellness, connection and tradition come together.”
