KEARNEY – The Calvin T. Ryan Library at University of Nebraska at Kearney will have a number of items on display celebrating the upcoming Great American Solar Eclipse.
Displays will include historical photos, news clips from past eclipse events and visualizations NASA produced for the current eclipse. Children’s books and other items of interest to younger visitors also will be displayed.
One featured item is a photo from 1918, the last time the eclipse crossed mainland United States. The image was taken by photographer John Stryker, a former UNK employee.
The special display can be viewed at the UNK library from 1 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 19 and 1 to 6 p.m. Aug. 20. It will remain through the end of August.
The eclipse occurs in Kearney Aug. 21. UNK is hosting a free community watch party that day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Cope Stadium.
Kearney will experience totality (total coverage) at 12:57:30 p.m., and the duration is 1 min., 54 seconds. Partial coverage begins at Kearney at about 11:30 a.m. and continues until about 2:30 p.m.
Sponsor NRG Media will entertain with music, interactive games and trivia, prizes, and plenty of opportunities for live video, social media sharing and interactive opportunities for watch attendees. Educational experts will comment and give eclipse updates throughout the event.
