KEARNEY – Teams of chefs will prepare fresh salsa or party snacks during the March Madness Cook-Off Challenge at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The challenge will take place from 4-7 p.m. March 19 in the Physical Activity and Wellness Lab Demonstration Kitchen.

cookoff-web-1“The Physical Activity and Wellness Lab has a great new facility and nutrition kitchen. Having these cook-offs is a great way to utilize and share the space we have with others who are not specifically taking classes within the Kinesiology and Sport Sciences Department,” said Marissa Bongers, graduate assistant in the Physical Activity and Wellness Lab.

“Competing in the cook-off competition is a great way for people to show off their cooking skills, learn a healthy recipe or makeover an unhealthy recipe favorite, and have fun.”

Teams can have up to five members – three chefs and two coaches. Coaches are not allowed to cook. Each team will have 30 minutes to prepare their recipe. Dishes will be judged on taste, health, appearance and theme.

The Kinesiology and Sport Sciences Department has also organized three cook-offs that were offered to UNK students and employees – the Tailgate Dish Cook-Off, the Holiday Party Dish Cook-Off and the Super Bowl Cook-Off.

There is a $10 entry fee for student teams and a $20 entry fee for community teams for the March Madness Cook-Off Challenge.

Entries are due March 12. Upon registration, entrants must provide a list of ingredients needed. Ingredients must cost $20 or less. Forms are available at www.unk.edu/wellness or in the Physical Activity and Wellness Lab.

Community members can drop off forms at HyVee, Kearney Family YMCA or UNK Physical Activity and Wellness Lab.
