Dr. Jim Payne
Jazz Rock Ensemble director, 308.865.8606

The Jazz Rock Ensemble fall concert is set for Saturday, Dec. 1, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will take place in the Fine Arts Recital Hall, and is free and open to the public.

The Jazz Rock Ensemble, directed by Dr. Jim Payne, UNK professor of music, will present a concert of big band sounds with works from the swing era to newer charts of the big bands of the present.

“Jazz Rock will perform jazz pieces styled in several types of swing, samba, rock, jazz rock fusion, New Orleans second line, contemporary jazz, ballad and funk,” Dr. Payne said. “The music will come from the libraries of Rob McConnell and Boss Brass, Duke Ellington, University of Northern Colorado Lab Band and other great writers.”

According to Dr. Payne, Nathan Lefebre, director of bands at Kearney High School, will be featured as trombone soloist on an arrangement of “The Nearness Of You” by Eric Richards, associate professor of composition and jazz studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“We are excited to have Nathan Lefebre play as a soloist,” Dr. Payne said. “He is a very talented and outstanding musician.”
