The 9th annual Fun 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, April 16, at 9 a.m. at Foster Field at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

According to Heather Wolf, UNK student activities coordinator, the race will begin at the Cope Memorial Fountain, continue around campus and finish back at the fountain by coming under the University View.

“We have both students and community members who put this even on their calendar early in the fall,” Wolf said. “For those who are avid racers, it is a great training tool as it is usually one of the first 5Ks in the area, and for those who would rather just be outside and enjoy some good exercise, it is a fun route.”

Prizes donated from local sponsors will be drawn at the completion of the race, and all participants receive free t-shirts. Registration fees will go toward the Student Leadership Scholarship fund.

“The scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding student leader,” Wolf said.

Last year, the 5K Fun Run/Walk, which is sponsored by the Loper Programming and Activities Council, had more than 450 race participants, 12 business sponsors and raised more than $2,500.

Registration fees are free to students who sign up before 5 p.m. on Friday, April 8, or $10 any time afterwards. The non-student entry fee is $15, if received before 5 p.m. on Friday, April 8, or $20 any time afterwards. Those interested may register online at www.unk.edu/fun5k or by calling the Nebraskan Student Union at 308.865.8523.

Those who wish to sponsor the event may do so by contacting Wolf at 308.865.8523 or wolfhn@unk.edu with a donation of $100 cash or $100 worth of merchandise or gift certificates.
