UNK– Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team members at the University of Nebraska at Kearney have been named regional champions in overall league competition at the SIFE USA Regional Competition held recently in New York.

In addition, the team was named one of the top 20 SIFE teams in the nation and won the “Entrepreneurship Individual Topic” competition for the event, New Venture Adventure.

“This (the New Venture Adventure) was held in October where we had 120 high school students from various schools learn what it was like to be an entrepreneur,” said Dr. Susan Jensen, UNK SIFE adviser. “We will also be competing nationally in Minneapolis, Minn., and if we are among the top three in the nation, we’ll win another award.

“I couldn’t be prouder of how these students have worked together and devoted tremendous time in completing their projects, not to mention how wonderfully they represented UNK at this competition,” Dr. Jensen said. “The students participated in the SIFE Career Fair and enjoyed getting to meet teams from the east coast.”

Teams are judged based on how effectively the SIFE team measures and demonstrates that it helped others succeed as an entrepreneur and/or improve the sustainability of an existing small business. Each team is evaluated on needs, project and success analysis.

“SIFE is an international nonprofit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders,” Dr. Jensen said. “The mission of SIFE is to bring together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business.”
