UPCOMING CHORAL CONCERTS MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5 & 7, FEATURE A MIX OF MUSICAL SELECTIONS AND STYLES

Dr. David Bauer
Department of Music, 308-865-8609

The Fine Arts Recital Hall at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will soon be ringing with sounds of George Frederick Handel and Michael Haydn, among others, when The Choraleers, Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus musical groups perform.

The Choraleers performance will take place on Monday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m., while the Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus groups perform on Wednesday, March 7,at 4:30 p.m. Both performances are in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.

The Choraleers will perform Handel’s “Samson,” an oratorio composed around the same time the composer wrote the famous “Messiah.”

The performance will feature various members of UNK’s vocal faculty, voice students and Senja Stephens, a UNK graduate and vocal music teacher in Arapahoe. In addition, Dr. Jim Payne and Dr. Anne Foradori, both of the Department of Music and Performing Arts, will perform a duet on trumpet and voice, respectively.

The Women’s Chorus concert will feature a performance of Michael Haydn’s “Vesperae Pro Festo Sancti Innocentium,” while the Men’s Chorus will perform Roy Ringwald’s “God’s Trombones.”

The Ringwald piece is based on a poem by African-American poet James Weldon Johnson, titled “God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse.” The Men’s Chorus performance of the piece will feature narration by Stan Dart, Department of Sociology, Geography and Earth Sciences, and his wife Carol Dart.

Dr. David Bauer said the performance of “God’s Trombones” will be especially memorable for attendees.

“The performance will be impressive,” Dr. Bauer said. “Especially with the combination of choir, piano and narrators.”

All performances are free and open to the public.
