Annette Moser: ‘My Main Focus Will Always Be My Students’

April 23, 2020 by gottulatm

KEARNEY - Annette Moser grew up around agriculture. The University of Nebraska at Kearney chemistry professor was raised on a farm near Blue Hill. She’s also had a longtime interest in environmental issues. Her current research project lies at the intersection of those two areas. Moser, an analytical chemist, is measuring the amount of glyphosate and its main metabolite in soybean tissues and soil samples using a liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC- MS) … [Read more...] about Annette Moser: ‘My Main Focus Will Always Be My Students’

UNK junior Hannah Way selected for prestigious Posters on the Hill event

April 15, 2020 by Tyler Ellyson

By TYLER ELLYSON UNK Communications KEARNEY – Associate chemistry professor Allen Thomas has worked with some of the best and brightest students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney during his six years on campus. Future doctors, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians and professional chemists have made their way through his research lab inside UNK’s Bruner Hall of Science. Yet, none of them has accomplished what current UNK junior Hannah Way achieved this … [Read more...] about UNK junior Hannah Way selected for prestigious Posters on the Hill event

Curing Cancer: Allen Thomas aims to better treat brain diseases

Allen Thomas New Frontiers

By KIM HACHIYA Diseases that attack the brain are particularly difficult, if not impossible, to treat. Brain cancer has just a 34.7 percent five-year survival rate, and Alzheimer’s disease kills many it afflicts. Part of the reason why is that the brain has a defense mechanism, the “blood-brain barrier,” that protects it from harmful chemicals, bacteria and viruses. That barrier also keeps out substances that could kill cancer cells or sweep away plaques and tangles … [Read more...] about Curing Cancer: Allen Thomas aims to better treat brain diseases

University of Nebraska at Kearney researchers testing corn’s ability to improve, strengthen concrete

July 17, 2018 by admin 1 Comment

By TYLER ELLYSON UNK Communications KEARNEY – The Cornhusker State’s namesake crop could play an important role in addressing America’s infrastructure needs. Researchers at the University of Nebraska at Kearney are studying whether corncobs and stover – the stalks, leaves and husks left over after harvest – can be used to improve the durability of concrete. The projects, led by Mahmoud Shakouri, an assistant professor of construction management, may have lasting … [Read more...] about University of Nebraska at Kearney researchers testing corn’s ability to improve, strengthen concrete

Exstrom Molecule 2_pp

By JAN TREFFER THOMPSON UNK Communications Inside a University of Nebraska at Kearney laboratory, two chemical elements have just become tungsten selenide. Argon that surrounded the reaction has just been purged from the container. It’s time for a heat treatment. Later, scientists will check the compound’s composition in a Raman spectrometer and use an x-ray diffractometer to test its crystalline structure. If all the crystals are oriented in the same direction, the … [Read more...] about Career in Chemistry: Exstrom builds up students, UNK’s research reputation
