The Offices of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) and Admissions at the University of Nebraska at Kearney are co-hosting the 10th annual Multicultural Scholars and Leaders Day on Wednesday, Oct. 31, on the campus.
According to Monica Mueller, assistant director of the UNK Office of Multicultural Affairs, juniors and seniors from high schools across the state will attend the conference, which will take place in the Nebraskan Student Union.
“So far, we are expecting around 400 students to attend coming from Cozad, Columbus, Gering, Gibbon,
Grand Island, Holdrege, Kearney, Lexington, Lincoln, McCook, Minatare, Omaha, Schuyler, Scottsbluff and
Springfield,” Mueller said.
“In the morning, Student Body President Cam Deter of Red Oak, Iowa, will welcome the high school students to UNK,” Mueller said. “The students will have the chance to attend workshops about financial aid, scholarships and majors offered at UNK.”
Members of the Multicultural Greek Organizations at UNK will serve as part of the entertainment segment of the conference. They will perform a dance titled Stepping and Strolling.
According to Mueller, five students will talk about the scholarships they have received at UNK. The students, their hometowns and their scholarships: include: Michael Perez of Omaha, the Davis-Chambers Scholarship; Francisco Padilla of Crete, Health Science Scholarship; Adrianna Tarin of Scottsbluff, Multicultural Community Service Scholarship; Rolando Gonzales of Lexington, Peter Kiewit Scholarship; and Maria Hernandez of Omaha, Susan Thompson Buffett Scholarship.
“These students will talk about what they had to do to get a scholarship, and what they have to do to keep their scholarship,” Mueller said. “We chose to showcase these five scholarships, because they are the ones that we work with most closely in the Office of Multicultural Affairs.”
According Mueller, UNK Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs Charles Bicak will talk to the students at lunch. After lunch, UNK Student Diplomats will lead the high school students on campus tours.
