Arias and Act I of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” will be presented in two performances by students in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Opera Workshop Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 19 – 20.
The performances, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the UNK Fine Arts Recital Hall. The performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.
“The program is free and family appropriate,” Dr. Foradori said.
Act I of “The Marriage of Figaro” opens with Figaro learning from his fiancee Suzanna that their philandering employer Count Almaviva has designs on her. At this, the servant vows to outwit his master. Before long, the scheming Bartolo enters the servants’ quarters with his housekeeper, Marcellina, who wants Figaro to marry her to cancel a debt he cannot pay.
According to Dr. Anne Foradori, UNK professor of music and performing arts, the staged arias will be performed in German, Italian and Latin, with the first act of “Figaro” sung in English.
UNK piano students Dan Yu of China and Maiko Sugahara of Japan will perform the Overture, Mozart’s arrangement for piano-four hands. UNK staff member Nancy Curry will serve as pianist for the remainder of the program.
