The Mortar Board Xi Phi chapter at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is currently accepting applications for two of the organization’s most prestigious awards–UNK Outstanding Freshman and UNK Outstanding Sophomore.
According to Jordan Gonzales of Morrill, UNK Mortar Board president, freshmen must have completed 24 credit hours by May 5, 2011, and have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above to be eligible for the Outstanding Freshman Award. Sophomore students who will have completed 45 credit hours by May 5, 2011, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above, are eligible for the Rosenlof & McKenzie Outstanding Sophomore Award.
“These awards are held in high regard and are a great way for younger students to get their foot-in-the-door and be recognized by Mortar Board,” Gonzales said.
“Applications are available at the Welcome Desk, located in the Nebraskan Student Union and on the chapter’s website.(http://www.lopers.net/student_org/mortarboard) Completed applications need to be turned by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30, to: UNK Mailbox Number 128, Kearney, NE 68849.”
Mortar Board is considered to be the premier national honor society, which recognizes college seniors for superior achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.
Dr. Kenya Taylor, dean of Graduate Studies and Research, and Dr. William Jurma, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities, are Mortar Board advisers.
