Dr. Kenny is a Fulbright Scholar who received his doctorate in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.
Currently the Director of International Education at UNK, Dr. Kenny lived in Egypt for three years where he studied Egyptian Arabic dialects and did research on southern Egyptian immigrants living in Cairo.
While in Egypt, he also served as a translator for the Nobel Prize for Literature laureate, Nagib Mahfouz.
He has published articles in the field of Arabic sociolinguists and authored the book Language Loss: Between Socio and Psycholinguistics on the factors that impact first-language fluency in a community of Palestinian Christian immigrants in Michigan.
Dr. Kenny will share insights into the current events based on his experiences living in Egyptian society and discuss some of the competing social and political forces at work – in and outside of Egypt – that might provide a framework for a better understanding of the current protests.
