KEARNEY – Loper fans will have a chance to learn about the early history of University of Nebraska at Kearney football at an upcoming presentation on campus.
Mark Ellis, chair of the History Department at UNK, will host “The Early Years of Loper Football” from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 6) in the Nebraskan Student Union Ponderosa Room.
The talk is hosted by the College of Natural and Social Sciences, and attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch. It is open to students, faculty, staff and the public.
Ellis is a scholar of Loper sports, public speaker, published author and has researched numerous areas of UNK, Kearney and central Nebraska’s sports history. Among the books he’s authored is “A Century of Sports at the University of Nebraska at Kearney,” which published in 2007.
His Tuesday presentation will include discussion on the origin of Loper football in 1905, the first 10 years of the program and what the atmosphere surrounding games was like. Ellis will share numerous photos from 1905-15.
The event is hosted in conjunction with the football team’s home opener two days later, when UNK hosts Emporia State at 7 p.m. at Foster Field.
