Phi Eta Sigma adviser and English professor, 308.865.8115
Nearly 130 University of Nebraska at Kearney freshmen and three UNK faculty members have been inducted into Phi Eta Sigma, a prestigious national honor society for high achieving freshmen.
“The UNK chapter, chartered in 1984, engages in campus and community service, and promotes scholarship through annual awards to selected chapter members,” said Dr. Robert Luscher, professor of English and Phi Eta Sigma adviser.
“We usually also induct one to two faculty members each semester,” he said. “There is usually a slate of nominees, and they are voted on by students who are active Phi Eta Sigma members.”
The faculty members who were selected for membership into Phi Eta Sigma this year include Dr. Paul Bishop of the Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Dr. Anita Hart of the Department of Modern Languages and Dr. Barton Willis of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.
For students to qualify for membership in Phi Eta Sigma, they must have maintained at least a 3.5 GPA during their freshman year. The honor society was founded in 1923, and now has nearly 350 chapters and 900,000 members nationwide.
