The Japanese Association at Kearney (JAK) is sponsoring a public Japanese Festival on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 2 – 5 p.m. at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Health and Sports Center.
Among the featured activities of the festival, which is free and open to the public, are samples of authentic Japanese foods, demonstrations of sumo, kendo, shamisen (Japanese traditional guitar) and origami, as well as a calligraphy game.
“The festival is an opportunity for the Japanese students to share their cultural traditions and experiences with everyone,” said Corliss Sullwold, associate director of International Student Services. “The festival becomes an interactive experience for the people who attend, because everyone is welcome to participate in the activities and demonstrations.”
There will also be a stage performance that will feature the Soran Dance. The Soran is the traditional dance of the fishermen, and the movements symbolize the fishermen pulling in their nets. The costume, which consists of all black clothes with white bands around the head, symbolizes the dress of the fishermen, according to Sullwold.
