Alex Zabel, grounds manager at UNK, received the University of Nebraska Board of Regents KUDOS award during today’s meeting.
KUDOS awards recognize university staff for their professional expertise, service and “superior dedication” to UNK and the University of Nebraska. It is the university’s top staff award.
Through strategic landscape planning, Zabel has enhanced the appearance and sustainability of UNK’s campus while improving operational efficiency. He has introduced native grasses and climate-appropriate plantings that reduce water use, maintenance needs and long-term costs. He has also revitalized neglected areas, transforming them into welcoming spaces for students, employees and visitors.
Zabel brings a proactive, solutions-oriented approach to every challenge, from severe weather and seasonal transitions to major campus events. The UNK graduate has created a culture of teamwork, ownership and continuous improvement within the grounds team.
“Alex leads by example, inspiring his team to take pride in their work and in the UNK campus,” said Scott Benson, vice chancellor for business and finance. “His vision, hands-on leadership and commitment to excellence have energized the grounds team, and the transformation taking place across campus is a direct reflection of his ability to unite people around a shared purpose and deliver exceptional results.”
Michael Cremers, director of UNK Facilities Management and Planning, added: “In a short time, Alex has earned the trust and respect of both his staff and colleagues through his thoughtful, hands-on approach to leadership. He has brought a renewed sense of pride to our campus landscape, along with a clear vision for creating a more unified and intentional campus environment. His commitment to sustainability and long-term stewardship is helping position UNK for continued success.”
Zabel graduated from UNK in 2010, earning a bachelor’s degree in recreation and park management with an emphasis in natural resources. He returned to his alma mater as grounds manager in early 2025.
