KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney will launch students into the exciting science of space travel and STEM careers during the upcoming Quest for Understanding Astronomy, Science and Research summer camp.

Hosted by the UNK Department of Physics and Astronomy, the camp focuses on space exploration and the science behind it.

“Space exploration is entering an exciting new phase, and we want to tap into that energy to inspire students by connecting our theme to real-world advancements,” said Joel Berrier, an associate professor and department chair.

Scheduled for June 23-25 on the UNK campus, the camp is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Participants will gain hands-on experience in physics, astronomy and engineering while learning from STEM professionals and connecting with peers who share similar interests in science and technology.

Activities include stargazing with professional telescopes, building and launching water rockets, exploring hovercrafts, gravitational mechanics and computer-aided design, touring STEM facilities and spending a fun evening in UNK’s Planetarium.

“We hope to spark curiosity and inspire students to explore careers that help solve the challenges of deep space travel as well as other STEM challenges we will face in the future,” Berrier said.

The $100 registration fee includes a two-night stay in a UNK residence hall and meals provided by campus dining. Registration is open through June 5 at go.unk.edu/quasar-summer-camp.
