“Heart to Heart” podcast with Dr. Jeffrey Gold spotlights UNK student regent Sam Schroeder, student leadership

The University of Nebraska System has released the newest episode of its “Heart to Heart” podcast series. The podcast series, hosted by President Jeffrey Gold, features conversations with researchers, students and educators across NU’s four campuses who are changing lives and making an impact.

Dr. Gold is joined by University of Nebraska at Kearney student body president and student regent, Sam Schroeder. The episode highlights Schroeder’s journey, his leadership role at UNK and his aspirations for the future.

Schroeder, a junior political science major with a minor in public law, grew up in Seward and has embraced leadership roles at UNK, including serving as one of the four student regents for the University of Nebraska System. In the episode, Schroeder shares how he became involved in student government during his freshman year, rising to his current position through dedication and mentorship.

“I picked up an application for a freshman senate spot, took my campaign seriously and won. That’s how I got involved in student government,” Schroeder explained, reflecting on the beginning of his journey at UNK.

The conversation delves into the unique insights Schroeder brings to the Board of Regents as a student, offering listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the preparation and collaboration involved in board meetings. Schroeder expressed his appreciation for the diversity of thought among university leaders.

“I enjoy picking the brains of the Regents and university leadership. We have a united front, but we all get to the same conclusions through different processes,” Schroeder said

Looking ahead, Schroeder shares his future goals, including his involvement in the Kearney Law Opportunities Program, an initiative that addresses the shortage of attorneys in rural Nebraska. His plan to return to rural Nebraska after completing law school underscores the goal of the program.

“When I visited Kearney, I fell in love with the community that we have here at UNK,” Schroeder said. “That’s one of our greatest strengths – our size allows us to be close knit with other students and faculty and staff.”

Dr. Gold praised Schroeder’s leadership and dedication.

“Sam’s passion for bettering the communities he’s in is inspiring,” Gold said. “His role as student body president and student regent is invaluable to the university, and I’m excited to see where his journey takes him.”

New episodes of the “Heart to Heart” podcast are released monthly and feature guests from across the University of Nebraska System and the community, covering topics ranging from education and healthcare to athletics and student success.
