UNK academic scholarships valued at $18M given to incoming freshmen

KEARNEY – More than 1,050 University of Nebraska at Kearney academic merit scholarships have been granted to the 2019 graduating class from Nebraska high schools. The total value of the awards is nearly $18 million over four years.

The total includes 243 Board of Regents scholarships. Among the most prestigious awards granted by the university, each full-tuition Board of Regents scholarship is valued at more than $26,000 over four years.

UNK awards more than $26 million in scholarships and grants each year. The average scholarship awarded to freshmen at UNK in 2018 was $9,154.

Descriptions of academic merit scholarships from UNK and those accepting, listed by hometown, include:

UNK Board of Regents Scholarship – Among the most prestigious awards granted by the university, the scholarship pays full tuition for full-time students with potential for renewal at a value of more than $26,000 over four years (125 credit hours). A minimum ACT score of 29 and 3.8 GPA is needed to qualify.

Kearney Hub / Omaha World-Herald – The scholarship is one of the premier academic awards at UNK. It provides room and board, tuition and fees, and books for the duration of the recipients’ collegiate careers at UNK. The scholarship is valued at about $73,000. Applicants with an ACT of 30 or higher and a grade point average of at least 3.85 are eligible to apply.

Distinguished Scholar Award – Provides $3,000 annually towards tuition for up to eight semesters with a potential total value of $12,000. A minimum ACT score of 25 and 3.7 GPA is needed to qualify.

Loper Achievement – Provides $2,000 annually towards tuition for up to eight semesters, for a potential total value of $8,000. A minimum ACT score of 23 and 3.2 GPA is needed to qualify.

Teacher Scholars Academy – For aspiring teachers, the scholarship provides funding for 120 credit hours of tuition and additional $8,000 annually for fees, room, meals and other educational expenses. The potential value of the scholarship is $14,592 annually, or more than $58,000 over four years. A minimum ACT score of 23 and 3.5 GPA is needed to qualify.

Cooperating School – UNK provides school districts who host UNK student teachers Cooperating School Scholarships in the amount of either $750 or $1,500. Students are nominated by the schools. These scholarships are renewable for up to eight semesters and required a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above and the completion of 24 credit hours during the academic year.

Kearney Health Opportunities Program – KHOP is designed to recruit and educate students from rural Nebraska who are committed to returning to rural Nebraska to practice health care. This program represents a commitment and dedication to the education of Nebraskans and to quality health care for citizens of the state. The four-year renewable scholarship includes full tuition and is valued at more than $26,000 over four years.

Kearney Law Opportunities Program – KLOP is designed to recruit rural Nebraska students and train them to become lawyers that will return and practice in their communities. An ACT score of 27 and 3.5 GPA is expected to qualify. The four-year renewable scholarship includes full tuition and is valued at more than $26,000 over four years.
