KEARNEY – Seventeen area youths are learning all about entrepreneurship during the annual Biz Kidz Camp at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

The weeklong event, organized by UNK’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Rural Development, teaches kids ages 10-14 everything they need to know to start or improve a business.

Biz Kidz covers topics such as finances, marketing, customer service and business ethics through hands-on lessons led by UNK’s Aliese Hoffman. Participants also hear from guest speakers throughout the week, with this year’s lineup featuring Isaac Mertens of Brandon Built, Michole Yaw of American Family Insurance, Lizzie Wheatley of USA Communications and April Myers of the Nebraska Enterprise Fund.

Each youth creates their own business during the camp and has the opportunity to sell their product during a public showcase.

Camp participants will promote their businesses 4-6 p.m. Friday (June 14) outside the local Hy-Vee, 5212 Third Ave., and they have the option to participate in the Night Market this summer in downtown Kearney.

Another Biz Kidz Camp will be offered June 19, 20, 21 and 24 at the National Willa Cather Center, 413 N. Webster St., in Red Cloud. The business showcase will be June 24 in downtown Red Cloud.
