Demolition of Welch Hall begins to make way for construction of new STEM building

Workers begin demolition of Welch Hall Thursday on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. The building is being torn down to make way for construction of the new $30 million STEM building. Located west of 19th Avenue and south of University Drive, Welch Hall was built in 1957 by the State of Nebraska to serve as nurses’ quarters for the tuberculosis hospital. It also housed UNK’s business offices and most recently offices for international education. Site restoration is anticipated for completion in April 2019. The demolition is part of UNK’s Campus Master Plan, and the 61-year-old building was determined to have no value in a 2018 appraisal. The nearby Ockinga building will remain.
