Nebraska Brass Band consists of 34 professional musicians. It includes UNK alumnus and former Kearney resident Paul Niedbalski, as well as UNK low brass professor Robert Benton, who will be a featured soloist.

“NEBB performances are wonderfully entertaining and showcase a breadth of musical styles, including original symphonies, light classical, jazz, Broadway music, solo concertos and others,” said band member Laura Greet.

The UNK Wind Ensemble also performs at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Fine Arts Recital Hall. The concert celebrates the 25th anniversary of the founding of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band sorority and fraternity.

“Our Tau Beta Sigma chapter has commissioned Kathryn Salfelder to compose a new piece for this special occasion, which I am beyond excited about,” said Duane Bierman, UNK director of bands. “Additionally, we will have three previous UNK directors of bands dating back to the 1960s, as Ron Crocker, Gary Davis and Neal Schnoor join us as guest conductors.”

Salfelder lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and teaches at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she serves as lecturer in music theory. An award-winning composer, her music has been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, Albany (New York) Symphony, Yale Philharmonia, New England Philharmonic, Boston Musica Viva, United States Air Force Band and Dallas Wind Symphony. Her work also has been featured in more than 300 concerts at leading universities and conservatories.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.
