KEARNEY – A food drive at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will help feed those in need on campus and within the Kearney community.
The College of Natural and Social Sciences Outreach Committee is hosting its Nonperishable Food Drive and will collect items from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday (March 12) at the east entrance to the Health and Sports Center.
Donated items will be given to UNK’s Big Blue Cupboard and other food pantries in Kearney.
A UNK organization that combats student hunger, Big Blue Cupboard provides food and hygiene items to students on campus who are in need. The pantry also serves community members in need.
Items needed for the food drive include: rice, pasta, noodles, pancake mix, cereal, canned fruit, peanut butter, canned meat, jelly, microwavable meals, snack bars and nonperishable juice.
The CNSS Committee also is hosting a competition among campus departments to boost donations, said Holly Peterson, a committee member and one of the event organizers.
“Last spring, we hosted the food drive with a competition for departments within the College of Natural and Social Sciences,” she said. “This year we wanted to expand the food drive and competition to the entire campus and add a traveling trophy.”
The winning department will get a trophy and chips/salsa donated by Qdoba.
