Ellyson writes and edits news releases, develops story ideas and provides content for campus-wide publications, including digital platforms and social media channels. He also helps maintain the UNK News web page, designs the campus newsletter and pitches story ideas to local, state and national media.

“Tyler is an award-winning journalist who comes from one of the top daily newspapers in the state. Not only is he one of the most talented reporters in the business, he also has extensive experience in planning news coverage and managing a newsroom,” said Todd Gottula, UNK director of news.

Ellyson comes to UNK from The Columbus Telegram, where he was the managing editor and led newsroom staff the past four years. He also oversaw weekly production of the Schuyler Sun newspaper. His career also includes work as a reporter and news editor at the Creston News Advertiser in southwest Iowa.

“He has the work ethic, passion for reporting and interest in telling stories that we were looking for on our news and marketing teams,” Gottula said. “Tyler also has strong photography and design skills, and a high-level understanding of media relations strategy and needs of reporters who cover UNK.”

A native of Laurel, Ellyson earned his bachelor’s degree in communications and journalism from Wayne State College in 2007.
