LINCOLN – Kayla James, director of Internal Audit, received the University of Nebraska Board of Regents KUDOS award Friday.

KUDOS awards recognize university staff for their professional expertise, service and “superior dedication” to UNK and University of Nebraska. It is the university’s top staff award.

James has been a member of the UNK staff for 21 years. She previously worked as an accountant in the Finance Office. She led the establishment of the Internal Audit function on campus in 2010 and has managed the office since.

Her main responsibility is to perform audits and reviews that provide effective, efficient resource management in compliance with NU policies, state and federal laws and regulations.

She also assures the Board of Regents and Nebraska taxpayers that UNK has management, control and governance processes in place, and that these processes are functioning as intended.

“If this sounds like a daunting task, that’s because it is. And if it sounds like extremely important work, that’s because it is,” read her nomination form. “But Kayla does it, and she does it very well.  Her exemplary work is due in part to her personality and methods. She is quietly confident, analytical, thorough, prepared and knowledgeable. She has an ability to ‘see through the clutter,’ if you will, and she’s a careful listener.”

James is a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor, and she is a recent graduate of NU’s “Maximizing Organizational Resources” Leaders Program.

“She is respected and appreciated, she is honest and clever, and she is downright fun,” concluded her nomination.
